Lovely :)

I would love an M2 Multi map competetion, but first lets wait untill the multiplayer version is released.

Reason why M1 competeiton didnt go so well, is well, because of the fact that i didnt feel like going primitive on the map editor ;D

Yeah i have to agree with the "wait for next patch" idea.

And i didnt realise how early the date was, until it was already at the dead line. I sort of took my time with the competition, then didnt even get to start.

Tell us!

Hmmm, my dad is a bit like no-poster, he's joined to the <font color=black><i><a href="http://www.ovationfanclub.com/">Ovation Fan Club</a></i> for 4 months but has his "Posted" as 0! He says, that "you can be silent if you want, and this is my thing that doesn't belong to you."

Well, it's his account!

Oh, and could I send the map anyway to you, pending there? And could it get into the regular one?

Oh, and welcome, Freeman! eh, want that I call you that name, had a bit confusion with papercut... heh!

UPDATE TO POWERCOMPLEX:
Power Complex now has a warehouse (this was a hard one), screenshot

Well, I think y'all have had a chance to practice. Here come tha real thing. I'm going to host a Meteor 2 Multiplayer Map competition.
I havn't decided on a timeframe, or a map size limit or anything else, so please post your comments on those issues.

The maps will be judged om my network with 4 or more players.

I might be entering, and letting the other players at the lan party decide the winner.

In the past, GNV research has been the most fun map.

I'll be posting the contest in about a week, but I thought I'd get some input first.

The maps can be any size, but the map must be fun to play with 4 players. I have had a lot of fun with the pacific islands map, and its really large.

I am but I'm thinking that I may limit you to the textures/objects/weapons/etc already in meteor 2.
You are not limited in what sort of scripting you wish to implement into your map, but buggy script usually makes maps less fun.

Sweet!

Motivation to finish my map :D

Mines a space combat map, involving spacy-like ships fighting with some "interesting" map desing (small asteriods to fight in, asteriods in general, small space stations, ect)

Maybe you could tweak the competition a bit, like allowing only 40 sectors (discluding the base sector) but still have a fairly decent (appealing to the eye) map.

You should try that for the next competition.

@aleksantari: You don't need to have you map done now. The compo isn't started yet =D

@papercut: Interesting idea. Maybe we could do that, and I will make it a 1 week compo, and ul a map template thats only 1000X1000 =D

@ every1: I will probably have some news about this next week on meteormods.com.

Perhaps have 2 different style competitions?

Such as, "free form" one (anything you like), and a "restricted" one (one with some limitations/rules on it).

I like the idea of the template, have a map template and try and make it off of that.

is that 1000x1000 or 10000x10000? Last I chaecked the smallest you could make it was 1500x1500.

Its 1000 by 1000...
I think I have a map that is that small, so I would remove all the textures from it, but I've decided against the template map.
You will be able to make a map of any size.

If you want to use a script, make sure that it works.
I will be announcing the compo soon.

Last question from me_:
What timeframe do y'all want?
1 month
2 months
2 weeks
3 weeks
10 days
XX hours

10 days?! Thats abit short if your going on somthing from scrap and you really want it to look good.

I say a month.

Although, i think 10 days will be fine <i>for now</i>, as alot of people here already have maps in-progress being made.

When mapping gets more and more popular, we can lower the time limit, based on how skilled our mappers here grow in experience.

Doomworld hosts competitions called speed mapping where a group of people work on creating their own doom .wads in only 6 hours. The best, well done maps (based on detail, size, and flow of gameplay) win the competition. As I haven't looked into it much, I am not sure if there are any prizes involved.

This might be kind of late, but what if you had an optional .txt file with maybe a level discription and approximately how long you worked on it, to judge the skilk level of mappers.

You could easily include that in the e-mail that you send me with your map. (not as a .txt, but literally in the e-mail)

Good Luck, and remember: James Bunting hasn't been prevented from entering this contest.

I also recomend a base .txt file for reviews and readme information included with the download of meteor. These text files will explain what is changed within the mod. (At this point, just 1 map can be considered a mod)

Here's an example of what I mean:

Mod Name:[Insert Mod Name]

Description: [Short 2-3 sentence summarizing the mod, or the background story for the mod]

Author: [Self-Explanatory]

Base: [Either the mapname(s) or other things that were modified to make this mod, or just type 'Made from Scratch']

Date Completed: [Self-Explanatory]

Review: [The person who this mod/map is sent to, most likely Me, Me_Mantis, or James will review the map/mod and give it a short description on how they enjoyed it, level of detail, and difficulty.]

OTHER DETAILS
================================================================
Co-Operative:[Number of suggested players]
Head to Head:[Number of suggested players]
Monsters: [Yes or No]
New Weapons: [Yes or No/Or Number of weapons]
New Projectiles: [Yes or No/Or Number of Projectiles]
New Races: [Yes or No/Or Number of Races]
New Sprites: [Yes or No/Or Number of Sprites]
New Maps: [Number of Maps]
New Sounds: [Yes or No]
Other New Graphics: [Yes or No (This can be the background, lava, acid, or water textures)]
Notes: [Other Notes to keep in mind, or install information]
================================================================

This Txt. file should be included with every map/mod submission, otherwise it will not be reviewed and posted at all.

(-=This is also my 1000th post! Hoo Rah!!=-)

Good point, Papercut!
Thats just for general submissions to meteormods.com. Its always handy to send in a 160by120 .jpg screenshot of your map for display on meteormods.com, since you probably have a better idea of what you'd like the picture to show.

However, thats not for the mp map compo. You don't need a .txt that explains the map, since the maps must explain themselves. I would recommend that you fill in the map name/author name/ e-mail in the map.

This is gonna be a super hard competition, because all the Meteor 2 modders are also going to be making maps. If you are wondering how good James is a map making, play meteor2. If he wanted, he could add script commands in the game just to fit his map!

Try Meteor 1 (Recomended)

Meteor 1 is less touchy than M2 is, and its a tad more fast paced, just missing a few features that M2 has.

I played with James and Armageddon, and maybe a few more people, my minds a bit fuzzy. It was quite a blast, and there was little lag, especially for how long the distance was between us all. James being in the UK and me being in the USA.

I just started doing theta again, this is a map set where we meet a guy we met at my previous set (City Bomb, at <a href="http://www.meteormods.com/meteor2/maps.asp">meteormods</a>;). It's a guy we met at august... there is also a new guy too.

As long as the map is really fun, you have a good chance. The mp maps in meteor 2 don't really have big scripts to make them fun. =D

You can translate times from UK to USA by:

central UK minus 6 hours
eastern UK minus 5 hours

I think so.

James, I quess we need a paging system here, this thread is going really big!

I have problems with it, mainly because here we have summer time ! In summer we add one hour o'clock, and in winter time we subtract that hour !

Alright! Based on the overwhelming oppinion that we should have the deadline extended, I'm gonna put it back to March 18th.

GL with all yer mapping, and I hope you can get the scripts to work out... Be carful with some scripting, because it will be different in mp games.

The SC_ToolBar stuff doesn't really stay local or global so you may want to implement more checks after you press the button.

Hmm... i dont think i will win this one :)

I havent been working on my map too much, although I am done with it (the general layout, I might add additional visual touches now that i have more time), but I'm still trying to get my basic script to work (all it is is making it so you have a fair advantage when entering a vehicle to leave the hanger).

I tried to add lights all around the map, but i realized that dynamic lights larger than 50x50 look absolutly <i>horrible</i> when its night time. I could stack a bunch of 50x50 lights though on top of each other, that helps, but it kills performance and takes a while to do.

I really havent explored all of the possiblilites of scripting, i'm still around the basics. Of course, i'm not much of a programmer and I dont know the slightly more complex C++ commands and how to use them properly (such as strcpy). But hey, mabey once my computer gets alot better that might incline me to make more amazing maps XD

lol... You win the Fastest Mapper Award Anways =D, Vir_Rat.

@ Alek.. 700 lines! Wow.. I've been toying around with a 800+ line .dat that will make some really awesome mp game possible, as well as a script so long, it alters the course of history!

@ Assian... Sounds like you map will be fun. Remember.. the GNVResearch has always been voted the most fun map.

GL to all y'all mappers!

(700 lines!! gaaa!)

lol yes, when you said SC_Toolbar would need SC_ConfirmBox attached, I had already 581 lines, I think at least 15 Confirm Boxes would take at least 119 lines... well, let's see. ConfirmBox as you might know just needs an if statement...
<code>
void Confirm()
{
    if(SC_ConfirmBoX("blablabla";))
    {
    }
}
</code>
... but the else statement would give a few more...
<code>
void Confirm()
{
    if(SC_ConfirmBoX("blablabla";))
    {
    }
    else
    {
    }
}
</code>
excluding the code it has inside "else"!! And if not, I can also add a few more things. I'm pretty sure that even if I do not win this one, I will win the prize for the largest script file!

All this stuff will not work in MP games. Make sure when you test your maps to hit F10, no F9.

Yes I do and the confirm boxes really work! I really played it with making a hoster and playing it all over in H2H AND THE CONFIRMS WORKED!

Mantis, I have done 3 weeks this map. I can't throw it away for some confirm boxes!

If the toolbars do not stay global, what can I do for it?

The host always sees the confirm boxes, but the clients don't =(

You can easilly make a sector by each startpoint that starts a toolbar if need be.

So, what is wrong with toolbar's locality/globality? Confirmbox does not work but what is wrong with the toolbars then?

And why my omicron map is not on meteormods yet? I sent you a fixing patch, there is just wrong that there is an 1 in SC_SetSectorTexture in the OpenFrontGate() function, although it should be "ColourLightGreen.pcx". If you could change that and set it up to meteormods then it would be fine for base omicron.

Base omicron is a map for Meteormods, industrial city as the entry or <i>Desert Headbattle</i> as vice entry iF industrial city does not work.

BTW thanks for getting <a href="http://www.meteormods.com/">omicron uploaded.</a>

Omicron is abit bugged. For instance, the red button doesnt work.

Also, the map seems to be lacking a some details here or there and variation ;)

Time wasnt an issue for me, but the issue was that I completly forgot about it this week (we had graduation testing :p ), and i'm gonna be gone all this weekend, and after that I have 2-3 major projects to work on/finish, so i hope you dont mind a slightly belated submission mantis :p

Even if I become not qualified from me being late, I doubt i woulda won against something that has 700+ lines of script that aleks is sending in O.O

Hmm sounds like somebody wants to win =D

If your map is fun, it will most likely win, if it isn't, a 70 line script won't help too much..(ok ok yes, it probably will)

CAUTION!

I do not need more time, I just finished off the map. I sent it to you mantis.

@assain: this is not the 700+ script line map, I needed to drop it and make up a 200+ script line map as a vice entry for mantis didn't tell what is wrong with the toolbars...

Phew, this was close.

I will try out the maps on this saturday(I think) and rate them.

The winner might get included in the next version of Meteor 2.

Well, sigma is 100% aleks. XD

And I will publish the soundtrack when it is done!

That would be nice to be included in next m2 release, but what I would like is for any future meteors to have one of my single player maps in the campaign. I wanted to do that before the official release of m2, but the forums wouldn't let me on so I couldn't really talk around much and find what was liked about maps.

I've played H2H on the maps, and we have the results!

Meteor 2 won't let you run over barrels, boxes or anything but other players!

I was still able to get that green swipe card =P

Congratz to VR_Rat for the most fun MP map! (Clap Clap Clap)

Would you like to make a speech now?=D

Second place was Aleksantari's Base Sigma map.(Took us 8 minutes of shooting eachother with pistols to figure out your awesome little code =P)

Attached are the #1, and #2 maps. Enjoy!

(ok.. they arn't attached I'll get them on MeteorMods.com)

You aren't supposed to run over the barrels at all. That is why I used barrels instead of extra sectors. How did you get to the green card? No wait, don't post it. E-mail me so you don't ruin the map.

How did you do that then?
We could see the health bars, but we couldn't kill them at all!
(were you supposed to get the green swipe card?)

Those barrels drove us crazy!

I'll get you a ss of how we did ti.

Wov, have I put my small "missions" so hidden? Actually I realized by accident that you earn credits of every "anchor-crate" you shoot. The hardest part of sigma was to coordinate spawning crates at SC_AddObject();.

And as we say: <i>hopea ei ole häpeä</i> (silver is no shame).

After that you should expect some changes over at meteormods.com

Did you forget something?

Cooper was the guy who gave the GNV allied intel. He was a double agent!

As I recall, Colonel Ash found him in Base Aplha.

Later before he could be interviewed reguarding the GNV activities, he was locked up in a jail, and mysteriously detonated. Shortly thereafter, the jail was rushed by a battalion of rebel soldiers. Shortly after the Allied guard arrived, the remains of cooper dissapeared.

I'm guessing that we won't be hearing from him again, but we can't be too sure.
