So, according to the updated JbPlay.com site, it seems like the first beta of (a totally different thing than we expected) Meteor 3 finally see the daylight in May. Let's talk about it. Since I have already seen a lot of early screenshots and gameplay videos about the 3D Meteor 3 (which is now apparently renamed to Meteor Elements -- which in turn used to be the name of an abandoned 2D sequel to Meteor), I am very curious and I would like to know a lotta stuff about it. James. Take a seat and some good brandy, and prepare to be interviewed. ![]() 1) How much on a scale of 0-10 are you sure that the first beta release date is May 2011? 2) Will it have improved graphics, sounds and animations? 3) Will the notable technical limitations that Meteor 2 had be worked away? 4) Will it have better, less stucky collision detection? 5) Will the scripting capabilities offer sector scripting and other stuff? 6) Will it have the super clever AI system that I remember you talking about a long while back? 7) How much maps do you estimate it will have? And can the community make maps that go official? 8) Will the gameplay mechanics feel more smooth? 9) Is there any deep message in the word "Meow"? Like, "Meteor: End Of the World"? :3 j/k here, lol. If you got questions for JB yourself, do post em. ![]()

1) How much on a scale of 0-10 are you sure that the first beta release date is May 2011? 7.5, but it may be rough around the edges. 2) Will it have improved graphics, sounds and animations? Hardware accelerated 2D using the brand new Allegro 5 3) Will the notable technical limitations that Meteor 2 had be worked away? There are no maximums for "things" and levels don't have fixed sizes (just keep building outwards). M3 is a totally new codebase. 4) Will it have better, less stucky collision detection? TBC 5) Will the scripting capabilities offer sector scripting and other stuff? Yes you can do more stuff with sectors. The "thing" scripting is much more advanced. Each "thing type" IS a script. You script each monster's behavior yourself. There are standard templates for nOObs. 6) Will it have the super clever AI system that I remember you talking about a long while back? See 5. 7) How much maps do you estimate it will have? And can the community make maps that go official? The beta will include a few maps, people can then contribute maps that I can touch up and integrate into the storyline. 8) Will the gameplay mechanics feel more smooth? Hardware smoothness with an M1 feel. 9) Is there any deep message in the word "Meow"? Like, "Meteor: End Of the World"? :3 j/k here, lol. Actually it's a sexy meow. MeeeeeOW. --- Notes: 1) A "thing" is a thing on a map. All of the map objects, power ups and stuff have been merged into things. 2) "Meteor 3: Elements" is the 3D spin off (like a mod). The issue has been with whether or not 3D actually works and the sheer time required to develop the game. Therefore we will test it. Elements is built on M3 but with 3D rendering and appropriate "Y axis" additions. James You need to login to create posts in this thread. |

I have a question. Is the terrain based in tiles, sectors or a combination such as tiled terrain with sector triggers (or something)? You need to login to create posts in this thread. |

Another rather important thing I have been wondering about, James, will it work well on modern systems? I have a mobile workstation with Win7 64bit, with about the fastest nearly next-gen cpu and graphics hardware around on the market. When I run Meteor 2 on it, it is a big problem, because particularly the map editor scrolls abnormally fast. Is it guaranteed to not be the case in Meteor 3?

@ParaSait That unfriendliness and super scroll glitch with the map editor is why I haven't tried to make any mod packs for Meteor 2. You need to login to create posts in this thread. |

If you're interested I wouldn't mind handling all of Meteor's art. For example here's what I've been working on for Doom lately. All the wall and floor textures are from scratch. pic

What about sharing at least some of that 'secret stuff'. It's getting ridiculous. All that silence for years, and now that it seems there's something you still don't tell anything. I like the old days better, when there were frequent updates and a more active and caring community. I'll still try M3 if it will be ever released, I'm just not looking for it as much as I used to it. It's hard to base it on barely something. ' ![]()

My best guess is that JB is rly busy and could be caught between a very inspired project, and a new set of tools that could be useful as I may have hinted previously. The meteor franchise seems to run along the lines of classic games - when you could make a game without much production overhead, but required significant playability to be fun. I'm sure it'll continue to be worth the wait, and unlike the tons and tons of projects that are fall apart, Meteor has stayed together, and continues to see improvements. I've had many lesser games I really liked get abandoned in the dust of time, but I'm sure Meteor won't fall to the wayside any time soon. ![]() You need to login to create posts in this thread. |

Yes the secrecy is a load of BS. M3 is being converted to Allegro 5. Allegro 5 will be tested using a new version of Mowteor, initially. It is not too late to switch M3 to 2D! The biggest hold up was the big 2D/3D choice which caused years of delays. Sometimes I am still not sure which way is best as 3D takes 10x longer. But what can a new 2D Meteor game offer which an updated M2 would not already? The first open Beta will have hardly any maps allowing for testers to submit their own levels to be edited for the final game. You need to login to create posts in this thread. |

If it's 2D, I'd like it if it would be meteor 2-like, but with a lot of more possibilities and polish. Or maybe you should go for the middle way. Make a 2.5D engine like Doom lol.

The engine been used is editable from the top and there are no slopes so I suppose you could it 2.5D. Next up is a new version of Mowteor using Allegro 5 which should be out in a matter of days. A new small minigame will then be released using the engine with Allegro 5. So... - We have Allegro 5 with JGUI (the interface and core). - We have a working 3D engine. Just need to stitch em up in a test game and review the tech. And finally... Here is a thought, it should be possible to render Meteor 2 in 3D provided that solid sectors etc had assumed heights and 3D models were present. A 3D version of Meteor 1 was made using the Rod3D engine but that never really got off the ground. You need to login to create posts in this thread. |

Sure it would be good to have some 3D stuff, esp if the engine is already there. But I don't insist. A nicely beefed up M2 is also ok. Basically I don't mind either way as long as there will be something! ![]()
