just curious:

How much does JBserver & meteormods cost to run per month?
Is the price mostly based on bandwith used or service types?
Would .torrent downloads help?

Well actually just rent a web server and be done with it.

We have an ev1servers server which costs 89 US dollars per month. Bandwidth is not an issue given the high limit.

Basic spec...

Server = Fully dedicated Windows 2003 standard with Ensim
CPU = Celeron or something cheap but fine
Disk = 60GB
Bandwidth = 1,300 GB per month
Connection = Dunno
Control panel = Ensim
Cost = $89 per month

We put a few other sites on there and basically make about half of the cost back by selling hosting.

We make more money through ad links (about 15 to 20 dollars a month).

So yes we make a loss.

Given the recent server problems I just rented a second server off rackforce which is not dedicated but has no bandwidth limit...

Server = Shared with 4 other people but totally seperate and rebootable etc.
CPU = Dunno?
Disk = 20GB
Bandwith = unmetered
Connection = 10Mbs (shared with the other 4 people)
Control Panel = Ensim
Cost = $74 per month

We now have 2 servers so I can backup jbserver.com to jbserver2.com and restore data quickly. Hopefully more "business" next year will help fund them.

So the short answer is $163 per month minus about $60 in takings. Clearly an excellend business model!

I should also say that we are in the process of reuploading the web server (we had to wipe it due to hackers).

From my home connection it takes about 4 days to upload so some files (downloads etc) will be unavailable for a few days.

I am trying to get key files back on-line first where possible (like the Meteor downloads etc).

I don't expect donations from people unless they are "old" (you know older than 29 or something) and can therefore afford it!

I just make sure the web servers do loads of things (other than Meteor) and raise money via ads and stuff where possible. I sell hosting and coding services too (actually its my job).

I make these games because I enjoy making them, I don't need a server for Meteor (but its really handy), thats for other (work) stuff too. Frankly the time spent making the games (when I actually get the time) can be more intensive than leasing servers.

Oh and I am 2 years older than Fuzi so I guess that makes me "gramps"?

heh heh gramps...
What flavor servers do you run? (debian, freebsd, windoh!s)
Mirrors or daily backups?
What flavors of Databases?

The service I'm wondering about is subscription authentication for an online game (which, given my record, I probably won't make.)
Users should be able to add, pay for, and remove monthly-paid accounts online. Automatic payments too?

I wouldd totally donate to you but U.S. Credit Card law forbids me to. You've done so much for us and I think my own money should speak for everyone when we say thank you =)

Update...

I dropped the Texas server and now just rent a server in Canada from rackforce.com

Server: DDS-200W
OS: Windows 2003 std
Bandwidth: unlimited
Control Panel: Ensim Pro
Disk: 20GB
Dedicated: no (5 way split but totally seperate BIOS etc)
Connection: 10Mbs (5 way split)
Cost: $59 USD per month

So the costs just dropped to $59.

Oh I run a Renegade GSA server from there too (renegadezone.com).
