The original 'Rod 3D Announced' topic is getting waaay too big and thus too much waste of bandwidth when viewing it. So put all further posts for the topic here, please.

Yes we do, that was the biggest thread ever. Almost done with the beta, I am currently optimising the map rendering to make it actually playable on slower systems. I reckon I can really speed things up. Think of it this way... A 320 by 200 map has 64000 tiles. There are 4 verts for each tile roof and 4 per tile wall. If you draw a medium/large map with a few buildings by just drawing tiles you could be drawing half a million verts every frame. lol! So my task it to cut the level up into large chunks are render just a few hundred shapes with shared verticies. Oh and of course I render all the grass in one lump, then all the brick etc so I don't change the active OpenGL texture all over the place too. Anyway, after that I gotta sort out a couple of weapon/ammo isssues and then finish off the maps. I got hung up over the last couple of weeks with some basic OpenGL issues with the code and adding cool stuff like mouse over "health boxes". James You need to login to create posts in this thread. |

Great to hear that there are no big problems. I'm getting more impatient every day... erm no, let's say every hour =) EDIT: By the way, what is that Youtube thingy at the bottom of every page?

I still remember me having exactly the same problem when I attempted the make a tile based game. Of course, I didn't think of making a "chunking-system" like that in the tile redrawing engine so I had to cancel my whole project! Phrustrating!! I'm happy that you found a way to implement it, James. =D

Yes you will. Oh and I got a pretty busy map down to 1400 (approx) polygons including walls. Its pretty fast now. You need to login to create posts in this thread. |

That's pure awesomeness ^_^. If I said that I wouldn't wait for R3D impatiently I'd probably get flattened by a Doom tank =D You need to login to create posts in this thread. |

Yay, the chunking system works! It's very noble of you to think of the people with slower computers =)

Yes, the fact that people with slower computer will be able to play Rod3D is great.

That could be a problem (the models use pretty modern shaders). But there is an F8 performance panel to identify the areas that need more optimisation. You need to login to create posts in this thread. |

It's May. R3D should come out any moment from now on. I'll make a lot of coffee and get some biscuits, and I will keep pressing the refresh button of my browser while on jbgames.com every 20 seconds, day and night, day and night... until the download button appears =P

This looks hot. One question though... will it have multiplayer support? I quite enjoyed meteor 2 with the RTS mod, can't remember the name right now. You need to login to create posts in this thread. |

Well, as it's going to be made with a heavily modded Meteor 2 engine, then it will probably have. Maybe not directly after its release but maybe in the future. Welcome to the forums, BTW.

Eventually it will have multiplayer. Rod3D is totally new, thousands of lines of totally new code. I pinched some sound code from M2 but thats about it. Downlaod the beta and see for yourself. James You need to login to create posts in this thread. |

How can you zoom like in the leaked video? Is there a way to raise/lower the camera _during_ play in FPS mode? If these are not implemented I hope that they will.

Blobs are the easiest monsters to kill. Laser and fire turrets are much harder.

Yeah the blobs are easy, but the mega worms are interesting.. it's not just killing the worm but it also splits into about ten of the little guys splitting from it when you kill it You need to login to create posts in this thread. |

The creation of the mega worms is a great idea. I also like the tanks a lot.
