Why is it that you can't edit object or sprite or weapon or projectile files outside of Meteor if you open the file up in Notepad (besides the line in the file that says "Warning=Do not hand edit!";)? If you could do this it would be a whole lot easier to edit stuff, because you could set everything up before you load the game and when you started it up everything would be ready to go.

I think you really CAN do that.

This link is dead. It's only still here because, err... yknow, it's some sort of... memorial.

DO NOT EDIT. WILL DRAIN BLOOD OUT OF POWER-POINT. ALSO POURS MILK ALL OVER YOUR CEREAL WHILE YOU ARE ASLEEP. WHAT A WASTE.

My website: http://halestrom.net/darksleep@Occasionally you may meet me when you sleep. In the darkest corners of your dreams, where your phone stops working and you don't know what to do. I'll be there; telling you that I don't support your device.

"Can't you just fix-"
NO! I told you when you bought this, when it goes wrong I can't fix it. It's filled with glue. The Greek goddess of glue Araldities herself would be impressed with this.

Please stop asking me for technical support during your dreams. Can't we just tour some surreal landscapes instead?

"How do I do that?"

Count your fingers. Keep trying. Make sure there's ten.

Then summon me. I am large and covered in wires. Clouds of baking soda pour into your world and a slightly weak yellowy glow appears from the LED strips behind me.

If you can see this message then you're already part of the way there. Keep all your styles disabled and you might see the dream within.

"But there's so much javascript everywhere! I can't see you. Help! I've forgotten to count my fingers! Where do I find them?"

The LED strip behind me pops and goes out. Dark spots appear in the centre of each light. I lift my finger to my lips. The smell of tantalum capacitors fills the air.

Ssh. Don't worry about that. Behind those frameworks there's another person sleeping.

Some day the javascript will sleep too.

actually ,I think it has something to do with the file spacing...the gaps in between the letters and numbers are NOT spaces...they're something else...most likely a certain blank symbol used by meteor 2 for whatever reason...wish James would explain the importance of those 8bit whatevers...

So, if you edited one of these files, being careful not to delete any of these spaces/symbols/whatever they are, and only replaced the text, would it work? And failing that, is there some magical program we could all download that would let us edit these files, thus eliminating the need for all that annoying, oh-so-slow reloading that everyone hates so much?

If it can work, it will be very good.

I tried it-it works!! You can create any new object, weapon or projectile. I made a whole new object and the only thing I had to use Meteor for was the sprites--no idea how to do those. I tried creating a new sprite in Notepad by editing an already-existing one and it messed it right up--give it a try and you'll see what I mean. Other than that, the only tricky part is getting the weapon mounts and the projectiles to appear in the right places-you have to figure out the coordinates for them.

It sounds better for me to use 'Paint' for the sprites.

Sprites must be made in 'Paint'.(You can't use a text editor to create them). You have to draw them.

Well, yeah. What I meant was that you can't open up a sprite in notepad and replace the graphic name that's already there with a new one you've created.

The sprite files are in a binary format, though they can be made using a text editor, see http://www.jbgames.com/games/meteor2/docs/tools/BigSprite.asp

Meteor 2 will convert the text file to the binary format during a load.

I have just seen the sprite generator. It is a bit strange but I'm impressed.

It seems to work pretty well, in any case.

By the way, when you look at an object file in notepad, has anyone noticed the 'sight: 150' value and\or know what it means? Is it the distance at which the object will start shooting at you?

The "don't hand edit" thing just means that Meteor could overwrite the file and you might lose some stuff you typed in.

In reality you should be able to edit the files just fine as long you enter valid data only (comments and other stuff may be removed when Meteor saves the file later on).

Objects see you at sight and start waking towards you. Then when they are in range they stop and shoot.

I am not sure if that sight value is used anymore? It might work that out from the weapon range values, I really can't recally. You will have to experiment.

Well, what I had noticed that made me wonder about that was that, when you come across a guarding enemy, you can actually get quite close, well within the range of your own weapon, before the enemy will start to shoot. They will turn and look at you, but will not start firing until you get to a range that I would estimate to be about 150, judging by the range of your own bullets. I'll try changing it and see what happens.

EDIT: It doesn't do anything. I had machinegun troopers with the value set to 350 and 3000, and the original 150, and they all started firing at the same distance. They still start firing well within range of your own weapons, though.

EDIT 2: Okay, you're definitely right--the sight value is ignored. It's set to 150 even for objects like the Doom tank and the uber-cannon turret, and they certainly shoot at you from far away.

the sight range value would be really useful.. that way, contact weapon based guys would move up closer to attack you, rather than sit around and not ever attack you.

I like your pic, canuck
