Hey-
Boring topix make boring forums.
What do y'all think makes rts or fps games fun?

I'd have to say for rts,
#1 The ability to counter a huge assult of the same type of unit.
#2 Units like the C&C engineer that can be used to turn the tide of the game.
#3 Units that are tricky to control like minelayers (C&C Red Alert)

FPS games

#1 Interesting weapons i.e. Guns that alter stats besides HP. (Like the CS flashbangs)

#2 Overpowered Physics (units getting literally blown away)

#3 Interactive levels. (force fields-Power ups-Movable objects)

BTW James, You may want to consider some of these ideas for future games.

(i may not post because of computer issues for the next month. Contact me via the meteormods contact page. ttyl)

I would have to say---

RTS:
1. Ability to have huge armies :)
2. Lots of varing units/sides/bases/ect
3. Detailed levels and a level editor :)

FPS:
1. Freedom to do what you want (pick up guns, roll, lean side to side, ect)
2. Online play :)
3. Doesnt get old/ always is fun or different experience every time

RTS:
1. Lots of units!
2. Game volatility. By this I mean that you can never be sure who's going to win a game, so you have to constantly be alert and adaptive. The joke I heard once is that in Starcraft, the game is decided in the first five minutes; the rest is carrying it out.
3. Modding support (Nearly all the C&C games are good at this)

FPS:
1. Stealth missions (a la Goldeneye/Perfect Dark)
2. Interesting weapons. The one thing that sticks out in my mind about Quake is that lightning gun.
3. Modding support (Yes, I value modding potential highly in any game)

About that starcraft joke-
Its really not a joke. Sadly the game is really decided by who builds their base/ harvests resources the fastest in the first five minutes. I never really liked starcraft for that reason. But I have to agree that the C&C games had very nice modding support.
BTW this is really my last day on.(at college anyways)

Yeah, I never really liked Starcraft either. I'm more of a C&C fan. Red Alert 2 held my attention for a really long time because it followed my top three reasons.

Ive had RA1, never really finished it, got to the part on the soviets side where it had a beginning level cinimatic of the Czar (ruler, president, ect) was in bed with one of his assisstants (?!). Ive always wanted to have RA2 ever sence i saw my cousin play it about 5 years ago, it looked pretty sweet ^_^. I saw a good deal for RA2 and its expansion (noticed how mods for RA2 revolve around the expansion pack) for about $15.00 online :D.

But then again, i saw it at the store the other day with 5 other games in one (like RollerCoaster Tycoon, and other games, which seemed cool) for like $15.00.

Red Alert is cool. Just make as many tanks as you possibly can (built about 8 refineries too). Then when you have 100+ tanks just roll them in, lol.

Red alert reminds me of a game that I always wanted called Warzone 2100. I never really found the game but I did play the demo for it.

well.. It seems as if Ican log onto the forums after all. :)

I still play Red Alert (I beat James and His friend over the internet quite recently =P)
Im sure that His RA stratigy must work, but ill have to play him again and see. Maybe if you all are really nice, he will upload all the patches etc. required for internet play.

I also play Red Alert 2. There is another server which is cheater and bot free. More details @ strike-team.net. Im always looking for more Battle Clan members.

Marks Skaggs of EA announced that they are working on Red Alert 3. (lets just hope they dont mess it up)

Dave Man,

Just to let you know, they recently open sourced Warzone 2100. They've included the graphics, but no sounds or cutscenes (you still need the full version for that). Try Googling for it. Chances are someone has already compiled a version that runs without the sounds or cutscenes.

I haven't tried it out myself, but from what I've read it sounds interesting.

Update: Did some Googling, there's a site here: http://www.strategyplanet.com/warzone2100/ that has a list of mirrors to download the the source code. It says it also includes a playable version. Too bad I have finals coming up :-)

Sounds promising, someone is bound to release a compiled working version soon.

Hmmm, I seem to recall a different turnout but I do admit ganging up on me_mantis (2 vs 1) lol. It was too tempting to roll in 2 players worth of tanks in one go, besides us 2 were in the same room lol.

I dare not challenge him to a 1 vs 1 game unless its coop.

JB: All that talk of COOP makes me happy! What would be better is if we could have bots as well, just in case there's no one alongside whom you could COOP. But many of the levels would be a hell of a lot of fun in COOP. Imagine one player getting the keys and ammo and what-not, and the other backing him up with sheer firepower. And if the fit hits the shan (so to speak), they could both go into, say, a complex, all guns blazing.... :p This should be a kickass way to play "Meteor 3D" whenever it becomes playable.... :D

What I want from a game:
1. fun interactive physics
2. customization of characters, vehicles, battle formations
3. multiplayer (same computer preferred)

And good graphics, perhaps?! ;P Heh!

Well I'd want all of the features and goodies mentiomned above by all, to be honest. The kind'a game that has all of those and executes the concept or overall gameplay itself well enough would be worth buying in my opinion.
