For the next meteor comp could it be a mini mod comp? Something like 3 mission max, 10 units max, 5 weapons max. and have it a tc?

Nice, sounds awesome, I'm glad you made this, as I just got done inferring a "Meteor Racing" idea. Some of the settings are a tad low though. Weapons should be higer than objects, but whatever, i see where you're goin. This will be great to give people more selections in M2 mods.

I left it at low numbers to make it seem less of a big project and more of just a small fun thing. It is also to keep all you overachievers down enough to give others a chance. Not that i have anything against you guys.

To make it more interesting a prize could be thrown in. An idea is a sneak peak at M3 before it is released for beta testing.

Me thinks that would be fun, although we have already seen some interesting M3 stuff from panda eyes 8o)

I like the idea that it would be small =P

Hahaha, well I wouldn't issue sneak peeks just yet, as it isn't our game to allow peeking at, we just play it. We'll have to come up with an alternative idea for a prize.

And yes, it is also kinda stereotyped that a modder has to be an over achiever, and has to create brand new unique mods that require everything to be new all the time, to make meteor feel like a whole new game. However, it doesn't need to be that. This mini-mod would be a great example to destroy that stereotype. I really think this competition should follow through.

Good, so all we need are some deffinit rules and someone to make it official. I don't think I wnat to be the judge because I can only do single player mods and I would probably not be a great judge. Post ideas for rules here.

Being a Forum Moderator, I nominate myself as a judge for this competition!

I can make long, accurate reviews of these mods, I already made some of my own for other mods.

You guys can decide whether I can be the judge or not =P I won't judge my own mod, someone else will have to do that. (imagine: "And Papercut's mod gets a 100% being completely flawless!";)

I also recomend that the competition due date is kinda late, being that I've got a world of work to get done, and I can't put my focus all into the mod, in fact I rarely get time to work on it much at all.

@aleksanteri: What's your idea?

@Papercut: Yeah you should be a judge, you're good a good modder so you would know what's good. Besides, a judge shouldn't be a competitor =D. I agree on a long compitition time. It IS still a mod we're talking about.

I"m thinking it would be sorta cool to set a deadline, but rate the mods as they come in... if any mods come in after the deadline, we can still rate them, and maybe put them into the next compo.

I'm suppose I might also nominate papercut as I might possibly make a minimod =D

Us mods will be talking about this compo pretty soon

Whoa, thats awesome! Great idea, aleksanteri!

But if I'm going to be the judge, I may have to lay down a few things that will be judging. I doubt I will judge things with a rating of 1 to 5. Instead, I will be simply posting about a paragraph or two about these things.

-What is the theme of the mod
-What the goal is
-How much fun is it
-Did I have a good time playing it?
-Would I play it again?
-Would it be worth the download? (99% of the time it'll be a yes.)

Now I will also be sure to let you know, that if I'm the judge, I'm not going to be easy to please. Take a look at some of these reviews of Doom wads for example.

http://doomworld.com/php/topstory.php?id=2818

Some of the maps on doomworld are amazing and they still manage to get an "average" rating. Now I'm not going to be that tough, but I will be close. I will truely express how I felt when I played the mod, anything cool, different, odd, whatever. I would also like you to keep in mind, that if I do happen to criticize your mod, It isn't directed towards you, and I don't want you to give up on making mods. Any submission, whether it be good or bad, is still a mod and it's definetly worth the respect it deserves.

So just keep in mind. I WILL BE PICKY.

Just a reminder (because this thread has been dying for a while) that the competition is still in session! So keep working on your mini-mods!

This Competition ends November 15th '06. So you have quite a bit of time, but thats just enough time to make it good!

Also may a point out that the winner gets his very own "VR_Rat Award!"

a TC means Total Conversion, As in when you play it, it doesn't run on using the same objects, sprites, textures, and obviously... maps that Meteor already had. All the stuff is new.

It doesn't HAVE to be a TC but its good credit if it is.

we have a total of uno, dos, tres mods.

1st to submit was Aleksanteri,
2nd would be me_mantis,
and 3rd would be Erik, if it counts that it is ready but not actually in my grasp yet.

You can deliver your mod in pieces, or maybe even upload it to a post if you don't mind

I hope I get more than 3 mods to review before deadline. Feel free to make multiple mods as well, it can increase your chance of winning.

I was trying to brainstorm ideas of crazy small TC's

I thought of things like Tetris, or Frogger, or asteroids, or any other puzzles or arcade games.

-I have no idea how im gonna make tetris
-Frogger can be arranged.
-Astroids may just be boring, unless it has old atari stlye sprites.

- tracking a bit

It would be great if I had more time... quess I need to drop Nanowaves.

So here we are (finally) with my accurate reviews of these mods. Personally, I was hoping for more mods, but I guess you can't ask for much from such a small population in this community. However, I proudly congradulate everyone who submitted a mod for this contest

(All mod's reviews are reviewed in the Single Player Perspective)

-=Aleksanteri's Snowball Mod=-
**************************
CRAP

...is exactly the opposite of what I think of this mod =). What is a better way to start the competition than with a good mini-mod? Aleksanteri certainly surprises us with a real turn in the expectations of meteor mods. This one is rather unique. It's a Snowball fight mod! You start off in a winter wonderland, complete with few forms of military equipment. You play as Colonel Ash holding one of the two selectable weapons. Snowball hands, and snowball cannon. Snowball hands takes longer intervals to throw, but does a decent amount of damage, as opposed to the snowball cannon bursting out crappy snowballs at a fast innacurate rate. The goal is to take out as many of the enemy snowball thrower guys as you can without getting pummeled with snow. You can even collect tokens from the enemies you take out. I played this mod for several hours and I gotta say, this one is fantastic! Aleksanteri manages to nail down a fun mod with a ton of replay value. However, If I were to make this snowball mod, I would have avoided military things like ships and robot turrets and cannons. This mod would have been flawless if it were set in a neighborhood environment, and the enemies and player were little kids in snowpants, wintercoats, mittens, and earmuffs. And I wish the map was more visually appealing. The ocean, lake, building at the bottom, and plains of snow weren't too catchy for me. So this mod is not perfect in my opinion, but it still manages to come very close. Download is definetly reccomended.

-=Me_Mantis's "Mini" mod=-
**************************
I was looking forward to me_mantis' submission to this competition because of how well he has pulled off his last few mods. Unfortunately, this mod isn't exactly the best of his work. You go through a series of missions blasting away turrets tanks and jets through plains, deserts, and cities. Did I mention everything was tiny? I guess me_mantis took into the literal sense that the mod was meant to be a "mini-mod". All the tanks, turrets, environment, are really small. He even reccomended that the mod be played in 320x200 Resolution! So how are my feelings for the mod? ''Meh..'' is what I said. Once again, it isn't as amazing as I expected, but it still remained fun. Sector work wasn't too impressive. new units were okay. Some of the weapons were fun. But it's not like it is something I've never seen before. If you want to find me_mantis' modding genius, you won't have too much luck seeing it here. Although some of his other mods prove otherwise. Download if you've got time to kill.

-=Erik's Musketeer's Mod=-
**************************
This mod is kind of like me_mantis' mod, except with more ferocious sprites and a lack of direction. In musketeers, you play an ordinary musketeer at Spain in the 1700's You get a variety of old aged gunpowder weapons manufactured from a blacksmith. You get a variety muskets to pick from (with extremely long reload times), plus other weapons like bombs and swords. But I'm not gonna lie, the sprites are pretty bad. The maps are pretty blocky and many sectors have too sharp of corners. I also found a few parts a little hard to understand, unlike me_mantis' with his roads to follow. I wasn't too impressed with this mod. But I did like the attempt at an original idea. This mod could be better, but it's a start of possible modding genius.

lols all around... I just had fun with that mod, and I didn't really like it, or make much effort to make it fun... it didn't ever turn out like an arcade game like I had imagined... Oh well =P

GG fer all y'all who participated, and I hope y'all that didn't get heaps of digital coal in your digital stockings for Christmas =D

I didn't make any actual winners, but based on the reviews, Erik's placing seems pretty much right. I totally thank all that sent in mods, even if they weren't "amazing", it's absolutely better than none at all.

We're gonna need some more competitions to revive meteor again. I think we are running out of members. Is it just me or is it only me, erik, me_mantis, mike323, and aleksanteri that look at these forums anymore? If anyone else, is reading this, please prove me wrong =P

Here's an idea for determining fourm membership. Leave a topic for everyone to comfirm their existance every month or so. Have a moderator reset it ever month so we know who is still on.

Haha a membership check-in list? I hate to say it but that's a little desperate if you ask me.

I'll try to come up with more ideas for competitions for the future.

We are the last members here on jbgames :(, but a check-in list, yeah like papercut said it is desperate. and competions, why not a 'remake'mod comp where every one is to make a remake of the 'not' regular mods ?

Or something like that... :)

Edit: b4 this mod-comp started, you said there would be an special-VR_Rat prize? how about it when we don't have any particular winners, who is getting the prize?

I also think a check-in list is desperate, but what other choice have we got?

We need to PROMOTE M2.

Before it, we need some major additions to M2 (especially to the scripting language). So we need to get v 1.22 out as soon as we can.

Second the forums need improvements and then we need more members

Tho we need James to pop up first... where has he gone again?

Also we need some kind of resource pack for M2. That would be some kind of project :) it would have the Objects Resource file and some other graphics and things... Also after the Modarchive incident I have never looked back to it, I need to discuss with Mike, you and me_mantis to get it over.

Shortly: the current position of us is crap and need improvements.

Okay then how about an active status. Shows when people have last posted and how often they've posted within say a month long period.

Every now and then I try to get more people into meteor. I'm not succeding, but i still try. It could also be that we have a lot of players, just not a lot of fourm members. I know that it took me a few years before i worked up the courage to start posting.

EDIT: James could put someone else in charge of the fourms so he can dedicate all his time to getting suggestins and working on meteor. papercut or me_mantis would be best for that.

Good idea with some one else in charge while james puts full power to the work.

Edit: I liked the idea of 'active status', and like on MSN messenger 'a green' man if you are online had been good to.

erik805: with 'you' I actually meant papercut. It's this modarchive issue that I really wanna take over.

I guess if James made the next version be real big improvement we might get more members, or get the old ones back.

I also suggest of James releasing what is done until now and we could suggest more. We need him over here.

Ok, we cannot hope to get new members b4 we have won back our old ones. Mayby they can make some new members, cause our 'comercial' is at 0,01%.

As you said Aleksantri, we need james.

Yeah. M2 needs more updates. And if M3 comes in within the next lifetime, people may flock up to the forums again. (hopefully)

;)
I do know there are a number of m2 players who aren't on the forums, and I do know updates would help...

17 days till I may be able to have another m2 lan party, and possibly get some of my friends who wanna mod m2 interested again.

I'm thinking that competitions shouldn't end.. we should just upload the submissions to meteormods.com with their point values and if some1 else's is better, its the new winner =)

Internet play doesn't allow physical retribution. (ie. you can noogie players you lan with)

Aside from that, I've got Dialup at my house running at 5KBps and a LAN running at 100MBps I'm not sure what sort of a stream Meteor 2 needs, but its definatly bigger than 5KBps if I've got 6 of more players on my end. There is also <1ms ping between all my networked computers where ping is >50 online. (200+ generally)

Its also really easy to communicate when the host crashes at a lan party, and much easier to connect.

There is a free LAN over IP program that will sim a LAN over the internet, and could immensly help m2 online. I'll find it for y'all.

I would like to play you anyways sometime, hopefully when a newer less buggy m2 version is released. ;)

Well, there's James, VR_Rat, and myself :). I do lurk here occasionally, but I just barely have the time to play nowadays, let alone design something - I definetely don't have time to make anything for M2. I guess I *could* and should try to make a few M1 maps someday though...

We need more original ideas. Personally, what I like to do is play more modern games, find out what I do and dont like about them, take every good part, cut out every bad part, whip up a fresh story, title, graphics, maps, etc., and that will be my mod. I created Crater thinking about Halo, how that game got so much hype. I was pretty sure that it was the giant, ambient, and atmospheric feeling it gave. You barely had to understand what was happening to enjoy it.

I tried to recreate that in my mod, and in my opinion, it was quite a success.

I'm thinkin of just making simple meteor maps myself, as opposed to full mods.
