I think it would be cool if there were an option to use the movement keys relative to your viewing direction, especially when using Mouse Look. With such controls you could step forward/backward with up and down keys, and strafe sideways with left/right like in most 3D games.

I heartily concur. It seems rather silly that the player movement has an awkward, arbitrary restriction placed on it, which all other game objects don't.

I think quake3 and meteor have the right control schemes for their gametypes.
quake3: aiming and movement is relative to monitorview
meteor: aiming and movement is relative to monitorview
