I was playing 1.42 Beta and playing Music with WinAMP in the background, and there wasn't anything else running in the BG as far as I know (nothing new or abnormal anyway). When the map changed from one map to the other (at the end of one of the maps) the game crashed back out to Windows. The Meteor 2 music wasn't playing BTW. Here's the log I found in the Meteor 2 directory immediately after the crash:

It said that the PDA thing failed near the bottom.... and why are you playing the music through winamp? Just put it in the music folder and let the game play it.

Because it sounds terrible wihtout equilization. I use custom equilization through WinAMP, assisted by DSP-processing (done by NullSoft WOW!-Thing).... Also, I had a very hefty list of fast, heavy Rammstein/PapaRoach songs and what-not that I couldn't load into the Meteor 2 music player....

Now thats some pretty kick ass music.

The log does not help much, it just crashed during the map load (perhaps when running the OnMapStart script).

Try this again, error replication is the key (that way I can fix it). I have a feeling that the music had nothing to do with this crash, M2 does still go belly up occasionally.

James.

Yes your instincts were correct.... I tried to reproduce the crash and it didn't occur on that level again, but when I moved up to a few levels after that, it again crashed during the starting of one of the next maps.... Couldn't get it to produce a log though 'cuz my PC was acting strange and the log probably got deleted or something. Haven't been able to recover anything yet either. But I'm sure I'll be able to reproduce the crash if I try again....

BTW you like Rammstein and/or Papa Roach?! Wow cool you've got good taste in music. First you include kick-ass trance/dance tracks with Meteor 2 and now you say you like heavy stuff. Amazing! :D

Im thinking your PC doesnt have enough RAM/Memory/Prossessor Speed to run WinAmp and Meteor2 at the same time. Most games dont run well (well, any full-screen applacation) when somthing else is running in the back ground, such as WinAmp.

If you have a document/site open, thats not a problem cause those are small and they dont really "run". WinAmp though, plays music and sounds so its running alot more than a mere document.

Im thinking this because i have had absolutly EVERY damn problem with my computer(s) in the world lol :D. And it seems as if its not a level specific/code specific problem, but a this-happens-after-a-period-of-time-when-this-is-running kind of problem.

Solution? Live with the game playing the music :). Ask James for a long detailed explanation on how to change audio quality through Meteor lol if you want an equalized custum setting that bad on Meteor :p.

Heres an Idea:

Why don't you just burn the songs to a CD and play it on a CD player? Or better yet save them to an MP3 player?

PaperCut: Heh! Nice! That's good taste in music. Breaking Benjamin's good, though maybe not that good while playing Meteor 2. Same thing with Nirvana. Alice In Chains is an awesome golden oldie band, and to be honest there ARE a few songs by them that would actually be fun to listen to while playing Meteor 2.... (Rooster, perhaps?! ;P ;D Heh! :D :p ) Jimmy Eat World is friggin' awesome, and two of their songs that I DL'ed recently while sampling stuff by them that I hadn't yet heard go very well with Meteor 2. First I tried "Just Tonight" which is very good, and it goes at least OK with Meteor 2 depending on your taste in music. But then I heard "Pain" which is bloody friggin' kick-ass while playing Meteor 2. Especially at the end of the song, when it get's slightly heavier and faster, it's fun to pick up the pace in Meteor 2 (or any other game you're playing) and really start kicking ass and wreaking utter havoc. I was firing like a damn maniac when I did that and I caused absolute mayhem in one of the levels while using a laser weapon on a vehicle (if I remember correctly) and listening to the end of "Pain".

Assain: My PC's got 512MB PC-2700 (PC~2666) DDR (down-clocked to PC-2100 (PC~2133) for stability insurance) and an Athlon-XP 1800+ (~1533MHz). And don't you mean the same thing by "RAM" and "Memory"? By the way I'm a seasoned veteran when it comes to this stuff. And even if I wasn't I's still know (after all this time) that my PC's capable of running multiple applications with heavy memory usage without screwing up. This is nothing (seriously). There have been times when I've had a game, a graphics application, a cheat program, WinAMP, 3 browser windows, an an extra application all open and working (doing stuff) at the same time while burning a CD and my PC still had the muscle to do some other stuff too.... By the way, I don't think this is related to WinAMP at all because I was able to reproduced what seems like the exact same problem again a little after I got that error (no more than a week later) and this time there was NO music playing and NO extra applications were running in the background. By the way is it really possible to change equilization for sounds/music in Meteor 2? I didn't know that.... Heh perhaps I'll bother James about this later on when he's finished work on Meteor 2.

PaperCut (again): Well, because I don't have an MP3 player, and it's a hassle to burn songs on a CD just to listen to them using the CD player while you're playing a game. Besides, an audio CD can only play 20 songs at a time. Furthermore, my CD player sounds very different from my computer and playing music with that while listening to in-game sounds is a bad mix and sounds weird and even annoying sometimes. Add to that the fact that I can't even play Audio CD's on my PC because the same problem occurs in Meteor 2....

As I've said before about the "HARD DISK ERROR", I actually liked looking through those sentances. I get to read part of the plot: Suprise party for the General and fixing stuff with spannenrs.

Oh srry i didnt resond.

There is a difference between RAM and Memory. RAM is like memory, except its Random Access Memory (RAM for short). There is a difference, i think memory could be compaired to long term memeory, and short term could be compaired to RAM, just to put it in perspective :).

Oh you confused me there; heh I already know what RAM is, hehe, but, umm, well, I think you're alone on that one, 'cuz everyone just calls it memory (or RAM).... There's also ROM and HD space though, and I think when you say "long-term", what you're describing is information or data that is cached on the HD, and by "short-term" you mean "RAM"....

Okay, let me sourt this out. RAM stands for Random Access Memory and is used to store indormation in currently running programs. Memory is used to permitaly store the program or data. RAM has a faster loading time then memery for it doesn't require a disc to be stored on, thus RAM alows programs to run at fast speeds. If you don't have enough RAM then the computer will start to use hard disk space or Memory. This dramtically slows down the computer as well as cause problems in the future like crashes. So it is wise to have plenty or RAM (For me I have about 356mb of RAM). Also programs running in the background like Spyware and such take up RAM slowing down your computer... thus these programs efect performance and slow down any other program. (And for those of your who want to know why I know this, I am a bit of a computer Guru.)

Let me just slip in a note reminding people that lights eat memory for breakfast, therefore loads of big map lights would be great Task Manager test lol.

Amazingly (you might think) M2 can not rotate map (its not supported by the color blender) so it stores a pre-rotated image every 4 frames (ouch). This is why map lights do not rotate.
