Nope. This was the best name I could come up with. This mod is heavily inspired by games like the Quake series, and Doom 3. The theme is very dark and kinda scary, especially for a game like Meteor. I dont expect it to be as epic as Crater, because it doesnt really have a storyline like Crater does. Though It will be a pretty big advancement. The mod is pretty much a TC, since I find it pretty hard to come up with something really cool with the default stuff Meteor already has. So there are lots of all new weapons, New enemies, New Player Character, and something I'm really proud of, a new tileset.

To give you a rundown on what the mod will be like, you play as some soldier guy that works in a dark rusty old factory underground, something happened in the factory that bent the space time continuum and warped in the crazy freaky looking monsters from a different dimension linked to a parallel universe. So basically youre stuck in the place fending off unimaginable creatures, collecting new sorts of firepower as you go. The struggle, as mentioned in the subtitle, is that the new race of evil creatures who got abandoned from their home dimension, feel threatened that their race may be completely obliterated, so they feel intent to attack anything that may possibly be a threat to their varying species. Namely, you.

I had already gotten a lot of work on this mod done. Many graphics are done, I finished making all the weapons, the player character, many of the monsters, and about 90% of the tileset. The thing is, I dont know if I have all the creativity to bump out a whole mess of maps. So basically I'm gonna do all the work of making all the powerups and enemies and junk, and I'm gonna send what I have done to anyone who wants to map for this project. I'll be sure to include some test maps to demonstrate how the tileset can be used.

If anyone would like to help make maps that would be heavily appreciated.

EDIT: Coop Build added. Basically just fixes map12 and map06 to have coop starts. I don't know how I forget to add those :(

Wanna help make maps for it? I hope to have a load of maps for it but I don't think I'll be able to make a whole lot. Plus with some buddies to help make maps it will greatly shorten the release date.

Oh yeah, in a game full of monsters, I plan to have loads of boss battles! I'm hoping to have a new boss about every 3 levels. Each one with more devastating threatening attacks. The earlier bosses will be used as regular enemies in later levels. Maybe I will make them drop an item that is essential to open a door to exit the level after they die. And of course, there will be a super giant megaboss at the end!

Yes, I did. I am still exploring the tileset. But I didn't understand how to name the maps (map01, map02... or names I want). And there is something else: Should I write the briefings of the maps?

Oh good question, I dont think this mod will need mission briefings. For now you can name the maps whatever you want, once I get enough maps, I'm gonna rename them in order from easiest to hardest.

Heh thanks Dark Rain, I try my best. I'm glad to see your maps are coming along too.

I dont know how many maps I'm going for yet, but if possible, a lot. I'm considering dividing the project into 3 episodes of about 10-20 maps. That way people can get to playing it. Unlike my last mod, CRATER, where I didn't want to release it until it was done, This mod I want to release it as soon as I can so you guys can start playing it!

Dark Rain is on a roll with a total of 6 released maps. I need to make maps that incorporate the set into the mod. I have a couple of beta maps that are generally unfinished, but can be worked to be fully playable. I gotta make modifications to some of the monsters too. I have also made a decision, in an effor to increase the speed of release of this mod, I'm going to be dividing the mod into 3 episodes. Each consecutive episode being more difficult and with additional content, and being released shortly after the last.

The mod shouldn't take a great deal longer, Generally much of the hard stuff is done. All the player weapons are currently perfected, all having good sprites, projectiles, and hud sprites too. I havent counted but I do beleive I have at least 10 different 100% finished monsters, including a couple bosses. Map progress is a little choppy right now as some maps are done but are not interconnected into an efficient maplist. I am currently juggling school and work with this, as I go to school during the weekdays, and work all weekend, and some weekdays too, It's common for me to go several days in a row making little progress. I still intend to guarantee a finished mod at some point in time. It could be soon, it could take a couple more months, but it WILL get done.

All the weapons are pretty generic, no room for secrets in Episode 1.

Chainsaw - Extreme firing rate, good damage, very short range.
Handgun - Steady firing rate, decent damage.
Combat Shotgun - Slower firing rate, good damage.
Submachine gun - Fast Firing rate, decent damage.
Chaingun - Faster firing rate, decent damage.
Super Shotgun - Slower firing rate, Very good damage.
Grenade Launcher - Slower firing rate, Very good damage.

Well, a rocket launcer is usually overpowered in the Meteor engine but I think a plasma gun would be nice too.

Well I just got done playing the new ROD 3d beta, and I think I may switch to that style, 3d tiles are godly to be absolutely honest. I don't think I updated you guys much on the progress lately.

At this point, I have a beta menuback picture, that I will probably replace because it was small when I made it, and became blurry and pixelated once I used it. I'm trying to make a short intro, that simply displays the title of mod in an explosive fashion. Not exactly sure how I'm going to portray that yet.

The Tileset is HUGE. I still expect to add more to it. More than half of the tileset is used up, and less than a 1/4 of it are tiles ripped from my old tileset.

Weapons and monsters are almost entirely finished. I have to make some big bosses, and a couple more smaller monsters. I need to make some concept art of the bosses on paper before I go make them on paint. I have no further plans to modify weapons at this point. I'm currently satisfied with the current arsanel.

I'm sketching out a couple intro maps that depict how the monsters arrived. Not entiirely sure how I'll execute that, still working on it.

Dark Rain has done an excellent job supplying me with maps that will undoubtedly fill up a good portion of the episode. His maps are pretty well rounded in terms of detail, and gameplay is consistent and fun, I intend to use all of the maps he had sent me so far. (With VERY minor adjustments)

This mod will use ambient soundfx just like CRATER did, I don't think I will be including much music. Maybe just for boss battles. I intend to use Aleksanteri's "darkmetal.mod" music track for the menu music.

Maps are still a little bit of an issue, because I think it's important for a game to have a lot of maps to get a good experience. I can map but I begin to get bored of it rather quickly, and have trouble getting inspiration in my maps. I would much rather prefer to provide for just about every aspect of the mod except the maps. If anyone is free to help contribute some maps I am very welcome to volunteers. =)

EDIT: In reply to what Naval War said, I'm not considering using a plasma gun or anything that shoots lasers in this mod. However, an RPG probably should be in Episode 2, as I have quite a bit of good rocket launcher sounds. It hasn't yet dawned on me how to make a realistic flame thrower that shoots projectiles that behave like real fire. If I can come up with it, I'll do it. But for now I don't think there will be a flame thrower. The Chaingun that you brought up, probably has the best HUD sprite, it was the chaingun that intentionally gave me the idea to make the HUD sprites like I did. And it has 6 barrels on the HUD sprite. I'm considering a weapon like throwing knives, mainly because I had an idea for a monster that that throws naturally made knives that grow out from its skin like a deers antlers. Killing the monster would let you collect a couple of those natural knives and use them as deadly weapons.

Well most of the maps already made are pretty small, small rooms, short hallways, with an occasional big room. A sniper rifle wouldn't be very handy in an area like this.I'm also not a fan of sniper rifles, especially in meteor 1, mainly because you can't zoom around the map like you can in M2. And I don't know how to correctly balance the amount of damage it does so thats it is lethal to humans and small things, but does little damage to giant things like tanks and stuff. I don't think im gonna make a sniper for this mod.

Progress is pretty rocky. and inconsistent. Many periods where things dont get done, and some periods where much progress is made. Episode 1 is coming close to the end. Should be done around June. I mailed my intro cinematic to James so he could convert it to FLC for me, because I don't have any programs that can do that, and I haven't gotten any word from him yet. Hopefully I can get in touch with him soon, also so I can get refreshed on how to work meteormods.com again, and upload some stuff thats been floating around these forums lately.

yep, projectiles are made by importing a pcx image, rather than a sprite, and the pcx image is saved into the projectile file. I don't think I'd need any animated sprites for my weapons though.

Monsters have many frames for moving, so that it plays pretty smoothe. Since still animations in units on Meteor are only used while they are attacking, all the still sprites of the monsters are of them in an attacking position. The player sprite standing still has some frames to it. (To make it look like he's breathing or something)

I gotta finish making a boss monster, and then a map to fight him in. I have a concept for it, but it's very big (to make it scary) so it's moving and death sprites will have to have tons of frames to make it's animation smooth. This is tough for me.

I would also like to mention that I have a concept for a Meteor 2 mod brewing.

This mod IS heavily inspired by games like Doom and Quake, however, one of the earlier modders for M2, mike323 (Maker of GunMetal) had done some work for a Halo 2 mod for M2, until later receiving an email that from Bungie software that he is not allowed to use resources from the game for his mod, which put it to a screeching halt.

I didn't want to tie myself up in the same situation. And you'll see after playing it, that the two aren't actually identical, though vaguely similar.

I've done some massive editing lately, Finished making a Final Boss monster for Episode 1, finished a bunch of maps, decorated a couple of Dark Rain's, and pretty much finished playtesting the maps and fixing many errors in my own maps. I'm currently assembling the maplist. As soon as I get Dark Rain's maps, I can do some last minute editing, and tie the whole project together.

Should only be a couple more days by now.

I'm not entirely sure how Copyright Infringement works, but to make it simple, The developers of Halo (In addition to just about every video game ever made) put a copyright law on their video game so that people can't use the resources and stuff for anything but their own purpose once they purchase the game.

I think you may be aware that Halo is only for the Xbox and Xbox 360 platform. Had the developers not put a copyright, someone who buy the game may have the ability to port that game to Playstation of Gamecube platforms. Shortly after doing that, he may get the idea that he could sell copies of Playstation or Gamecube version that he made for the same price as the one for Xbox. Needless to say, the developers of Halo would be angry. They spent all that time making the graphics and storyline and soundfx for Halo and put it for sale, then some guy who ports it to Playstation and Gamecube starts making the same (or more) money as the guys who developed Halo are, for only a fraction of the work.

This is not the only reason people put copyrights on their games, just an example. Even though Mike323 had no intention to make money off of the Halo 2 mod, the developers of Halo had a fear that that this little mod for a game they haven't heard of may grow to be a huge hit in popular culture, and possibly make money off the production of the mod by selling it to people who really want it. Then Mike would have been making money off Halo, and not his own original work. Mike still had no intention to do that, but the developers of Halo did not want someone making a living of their own idea, so they requested that Mike not make this Halo mod.

To be honest, I doubt they did any research on the popularity of Meteor and where Meteor will be in the future, if they had, they probably would have let that mod go.

But in terms of modding for just about any game, taking resources from a source that is generating an income is illegal. I doubt many people ever get caught, though it's still in poor taste to take resources it, and often frowned upon by critics who often hope for things to be original and not ripped from something else.

Sound is indeed a huge problem for modding or 0$-investment projects. Graphics, for example, is something you can make yourself, just open Paint or anything (better =P) and start drawing. But sounds are something you can't just make on your computer; you have to record it in real. And that's why they are mostly not free. E.A. if you want to record a gunshot, you:
- Have to buy a gun
- Have to buy the bullet you shoot
- Have to find someone who is experienced enough to shoot the gun.
And that does cost some money.

If you Google long enough though, you may find some good free sounds, but of course not good enough if you want to make a mod that almost exactly resembles and existing game.

Yeah I have to admit I borrowed soundfx from various non-free resources. It is a little shameful, but I can't make the growls of monster and zombies on my own, I don't know where to get a chaingun or grenade launcher, or the sounds of computerized switches and stuff. However, at least more than half of the sounds I have are from free resources, such as a good deal of the ambient soundfx I have. (I know someone who composed most of them for a different TC for a different game, he allowed me to use them.)

I agree with Papercut. Most of the creators of a game will not allow you to use their stuff because they are afraid that the mod may become more popular than the game itself.

Anyway, Mankind E1 is really close to finished. Basically all I need to do now is fix the boss's death sprite, Get Dark Rains maps, and fix the intro and end animations.

And I had already made few preparations for E2.

I want Episode 2 to be bigger and better, and to do that I'm probably going to need more help. The biggest thing would be mapping. I need lots of maps and I'm not very good at coming up with lots of maps on my own. If you don't think you are even that good at mapping, that's fine. Make something with lots of rooms, hallways, a start and an exit, and I'll do all the detail work. I will need help coming up with new weapons and monsters too. (Don't tell me all your ideas here, tell me on IRC instead.) There will probably be more hurdles to jump as the progress of Episode 2 gets deeper. I should also warn that it is possible your work may get modified or even scrapped before the final release, I'll be sure to notify you why if it does.

For now, If anyone want's to sign up for the Mankind E2 development team, please let me know. If I have more members, the faster Mankind E2 will get released. :)

Umm I dont know, loading game data works fine for me. Do you get any error messages? Try reinstalling the mod again, just download it and extract it to the same directory and replace everything.

I didn't get to tell Darkrain before he left for vacation, but I actually had to scrap some of his later levels because they were simply too hard. One of his maps was almost entirely Shotgun zombies and Spirits. There was not enough ammo and definitely not enough health.

Not quite, 70% of the maps in Mankind are DarkRains. In total I only made about 6.

I plan to save the maps that got scrapped for a "Mankind: Director's Cut", a deleted scenes type thing, just ordinary Mankind maps that were never in Mankind.

I just completed playing the mod. It was Awesome with a capital letter! It was so good that it really felt like you were playing a "real", commercial game. It's THE best mod I have ever played and it really kept me sweet for hours! It needs some more machinegun bullets though.

Definitely worth playing twice or even more!
